WORK EXPERIENCE

My professional experience includes 12 years of private sector environmental consulting with firms such as Dames & Moore, Getty Oil Company (International Division), ERTEC-Western, as well as running my own cartographic company.  The work involved resource exploration, management, and environmental assessments using field studies and remote sensing.  After riding the private sector employment roller coaster, I decided to transition to teaching.  I taught (secondary to college / university / adult) for more than 29 years(in 3 states and 8 foreign countries).  Most of the teaching involved natural science (primarily Geography) with some technical mathematics, English, and computer technology.  My work, travel, and teaching has taken me to 45 of the 50 United States and to more than 25 countries.

Past Community Service Activities

• Free Fruit Tree Distribution:This was an RTC-TH community service effort at Wat Thai-Los Angeles affiliated with Tree People.
• Public Land Corp Grant:Conducted at Manzanar National Historic Site, US National Park Service, introducing urban youth to outdoor entry level jobs combined with cultural diversity and volunteerism in US National Parks.  Collaborated with various local area community groups (e.g. LA Community Partners, Esperanza, LA Conservation Corps, and others) to recruit participants from their members.
• Habitat Steward Training:This was an ESSI (Earth Systems Science, Inc.---a non-profit community education organization I co-founded) activity under the auspices f the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to train and nurture Habitat Stewards in the greater Los Angeles Basin.
• Backyard Wildlife Habitat:A NWF program to reconnect urban families with nature.  ESSI used this to also enhance science education as a family activity at home.  Collaborated with local Audubon Society and Tree People projects at various parks, schools, and local natural habitat and tree planting efforts.
• Cultural Diversity:Design / developed / implemented outdoor education programs and field trips for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) local affiliate (Los Angeles Community Partners—LAPC) to connect disadvantaged urban youth with nature and visits to US National Parks.
• REEEPP(Rural Environmental Education Enhancement Pilot Program): An innovative, non-traditional integration of math, science, geography, technology, and English language outdoor education project demonstrating a possible alternative for reforming and improving rural Thai public schools.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Self-Sufficient / Sustainable Agriculture:Resource management specialist for the Rural Training Center-Thailand (RTC-TH) which I co-founded with Saifon Lee (my spouse) in 2004.  Creating and operating a demonstration family farm applying the “King’s Theory” for self-sufficient / sustainable agriculture.  See www.neighborhoodlink.com/org/rtcth

Curriculum Specialist:In charge of overall lesson development for the RTC-TH programs (see the PDF “2009 RTC-TH Logos Summary” in the “Documents section found at http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/Rural_Training_Center-Thailand/pages )  This includes the lessons for the RTC-TH Demonstration Farm, the REEEPP effort at Ban Na Fa Elementary School, and the RTC-TH EmComm effort.  Perform curriculum consulting to the "Global Butterfly" community-based education group (http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/Global_Butterfly/home)

Amateur Radio:I received my FCC Technician license in Nov 2006 and my FCC General license in May 2007; call KI6GIG).  I hold a valid Thai Intermediate reciprocal license (call HS0ZHM).  My key interest is Emergency Preparedness (EmPrep) and Emergency Communications (EmComm).  A primary project requiring much time and effort is Sparky (the “Batt-mobile”) and Sam (the “Volts-wagen”) as well setting up basic radio station facilities at 2 operating sites in our area as part of the RTC-TH EmComm system.  We have also collaborated with the Glendora Emergency Response Communications (GERC) community group to serve as the GERC-Auxiliary Internatioanl (GERC-AI) contact.  I also serve as an Editor for the (GERC) website.  I authored various lessons sets (e.g. MEWS---Mobile Emergency Weather Station, Emergency Preparedness, and introductory lessons for new hams).  MEWS was featured on QRZ.com, Hamuniverse.com, and in the MyGAREC 2012 international conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

International E-mentoring:Using the internet (e.g. email, various chat programs, and skype), I maintain efforts to mentor former students (some are now teachers), friends and their children, concerning education planning, study skills, and a variety of topics at their request.
