When we Started

The Amphi Neighborhood Association was formed on September 2nd, 1997, to preserve the integrity of the neighborhood & to retain established land use patterns that would enhance the quality of life for our residents.

Initially, the boundaries were 1st Ave on the east, Oracle Rd on the west, Ft. Lowell Rd on the south & Prince Rd on the north.

In 1999 the neighborhood association voted to include the area to Roger Rd on the north.

Some of the things we've accomplished

1999 - When Sacred Heart Church agreed to donate
some unused property to the City, the
neighborhood association wrote proposals
for funding to the Pima County
"Neighborhood Reinvestment Program" and
the City of Tucson to build "Amphi
Neighborhood Park".

2000 - Became involved with the "Christmas in
April" program, getting close to 1500
volunteers in helping to get 36 houses
renovated in some way & finishing on the
same weekend.

2001 - We started our involvment with Sacred
Heart Church's annual "Hospitality
Night" of feeding & housing approximately
10 homeless men during "Operation Deep
Freeze" in the winter.

2002 - Assisted "La Paloma Family Services" in
writing Grants in order to build a Group
Home for boys & the Menninger Neighborhood
Community Center. Because of this, we now
have a permanent location to hold our
monthly meetings.

2003 - Received a Grant from "Pro Neighborhoods"
of the City of Tucson to build "Amphi
Community Garden" on property owned at
that time by Turning Point School. The
garden was closed down after the property
was sold to "Clarum Homes" of Palo Alto,
Calif. in order to build 32 townhomes.

2004 - We petitioned the neighborhood to have
the "Ballfield" at Amphi Neighborhood Park
dedicated to Gilbert Najore who was
instrumental in the building of the
original ballfield many years ago. A
formal dedication ceremony was held and a
plaque was installed by the City of
Tucson Parks & Recreation Dept. behind
the backstop in his honor. Sadly, Gil
Nagore passed away March 11th, 2009.

2006 - All the residential streets in our 1
square mile neighborhood were repaved in
September for the first time in over 30
years.

2007 - Received a total of $650,000.00 in
Funding from the Pima County Neighborhood
Reinvestment Program & Ward III Back to
Basics, for major infrastructure
improvements such as, finishing the
sidewalks along N. 1st Ave from Prince Rd
to Roger Rd, install a total of 22 street
lights on E. Navajo, E. Mohave &
E. Yvapai from Stone Ave. to Los Altos,
along with 4 additional lights on W.
Navajo. Also installed were
traffic mitigation devices (13 Speed
Tables & 3 Traffic Circles)in the
neighborhood in order to slow the speed
of traffic and reduce cut thru traffic.

2008 - Amphi,along with Balboa Hts, Coronado
Hts, Keeling, El Cortez Hts and
Northwest neighborhoods joined together
with the Ward III City Council Office
and Tucson Police Dept. to form "North
Tucson Coalition". Together,we filed an
application in September to the U.S.
Deptartment of Justice to be considered
for selection as a formal "Weed & Seed
Community." This is a 5 year, $1 million
program to "Weed" out violent crime,
criminal drug related activity and gang
activity. The "Seed" side targets the
communities social and economic
revitalization.
The national selection was to be held in
November, but due to the economic crisis
and cutbacks, this was postponed.
As of August 2009, there hasn't been a
decision made on the 20-30 sites that are
chosen nationally.
The interim Steering Committee continues
to meet monthly at 5:45 on the 3rd Monday
at the TPD West substation located at
1310 W Miracle Mile.
