WESTOVER COOKBOOK

It was almost unheard of for a black man to be given an opportunity to build homes in the 1940?’s. Winnrose Way, Virginia Ave., Plato Terrace, Sunset Ave., Grand Ave., Greenwood Ave., Southwestern Pkwy is all located west of Forty-Fifth Street and are among some of Plato?’s creations.

Samuel Plato was one of the most successful local builders of the middle period of the twentieth century. He was also credited with the banks at sixth and Walnut (now gone), Virginia Avenue School, Green Street Baptist Church, Lampton Baptist Church, Broadway Temple A.M.E. Zion Church and post offices and many other structures

Long before James Brown?’s song ?“ I?’m Black and I?’m Proud?”, our parents were able to invest in homes for their families from a man who invested in them. In the 40?’s, 50?’s, 60?’s and 70?’s our West End neighborhoods (also known as Westover) was one of the best areas for blacks to live.

Mr. Plato and Westover are part of our own history that needs to be told to the next generations. That is why we like for you to help create a Westover cookbook. This cookbook would not be complete if it did not include pictures, recipes, and stories, from all the fathers, mothers, sons and daughters that lived and grew up in a house that Plato built.
