    Pigeon problems!

    Over the past two years, our block has been invaded by pigeons. We like birds but the term "rats with wings" is an accurate description of these messy birds.

    What can we do to get rid of them? Does the city or neighborhood assoc. do anything to assist homeowners interested in ridding their neighborhood of pigeons? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    what about the rats with fluffy

    What about the "rats" with fluffy tails in Wash Park? You know who I mean... those squirrels. I hate them. I was trying to have a picnic with my son and they were coming right up to our blanket and grabbing our food. Another day I was pushing my son on the swing and when we went back to the stroller, a squirrel was in the bottom storage area of the stroller, in my bag, looking for food. I HATE THEM>>>>> is there a way to get rid of them?

    If you had one ounce of compassion in your heart you would think differently about squirrels. Squirrels are cute, friendly, intelligent creatures. They are dedicated parents who spend two to three months raising their young.
    And by the way, Stella, how long have YOU lived in Wash Park? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure squirrels were here before you moved in and took over THEIR territory!
    Instead of teaching your child to hate urban wildlife by the ugly attitude you appear to have, why not raise your son to value the few animals we have in the city? Why not purchase some shelled unsalted peanuts and bring them to the park for your next picnic? Remember, the squirrels are just doing what they need to do to survive -- hunting for food. If you want to keep squirrels away from you and your property, don't make food available to them. They are just animals and don't understand the difference between hunting for a peanut butter sandwich in you bag and hunting for leftovers in our dumpsters.
    Finally, I didn't realize that you own the public park space and have a right to "get rid" of the wildlife that others cherish. And if "getting rid" of them is in your plans, be aware that poisoning wild animals is a violation of city and state law.
    Please educate yourself and your children about these neat little creatures. I'll bet if you knew more about them and their lives you would treasure them just as you might a wild fox or a family pet.
    Every little life is valuable: the squirrel can't help it that he was born a squirrel instead of a pure bred show dog. Don't take away their lives just because they aren't as pretty or prestigious as some other creatures!
