SLNC MEETING MINUTES Oct 14, 2009

Minutes for the SLNC meeting October 14th 2009.

Meeting time:  7pm

Location:  Churchill Downs

Acting Convener:  Barbara Nichols, President Iroquois

In attendance:

Gail Linville, President St. Joseph

Bob Sarver, St. Joseph

Maury Weedman, President Oakdale

Sandy Dovolas, Oakdale

Margaret Osborne, Oakdale

Jeff Miller, Interim President, Beechmont

Diane, Iroquois Secretary

Gary Jany, President Wilder Park

Gary Jany acted as secretary for this meeting.

A general discussion about the nature of the next meeting in January 2010.  Should we notify district council people to attend?  Aids?   We have a list of questions for them including:

What is the state of the department of  neighborhoods?  What is the status of the 2010 junk pickups?  What are the 2010 grant procedures?  Maintenance, development and care of Iroquois Park.  State of all area parks in general.  Replacement of tree canopy to include 3rd street and other neighborhood areas.

Discussed an action item of a group cleanup of parks to bring exposure to the fact that the area associations and neighbors care about and want more for our parks.

BEECHMONT:  They are breaking ground on the new firehouse soon.  It will be 1 year to finish the project.  They will demolish the existing one.  Olmsted South has  bought 3 lots to make a green space on the parkway.  Beechmont will apply for a Brightside grant for the mowing of the lot on 3rd and Florence.  We should plant drought resistant trees and shrubbery on this lot.

Barbara will follow up on the status of the welcome sign that is being proposed for the 3rd and Florence lot.

A general discussion of the Family Dollar store in general.  They have issues with carts and in general are a mess.  Not a desirable store for the area due to this.

A general discussion about creating postitive PR for the area:

Historical dedications of property; 3 are lined up in the Iroquios area.

Need to enhance and promote the postive aspects of our neighborhoods.  This can be accomplished through creating an identity for the neighborhood:

  • Historical aspects
  • Signficant structures such as "all steel" homes
  • Maps of bygone structures or landmarks such as the original racetracks that existed in the areas.

Conversation moved to our Christmas parties.  It was suggested to approach Churchill Downs to host a general party for all neighborhoods rather than individual parties.  Needed to identify a date and approval from CD, and SLNC would approach CD at the scheduled meeting with Kevin Flanery the following week.

Next meeting:  January 13th 2010; Maury Weedman of Oakdale to convene.

Continuous meetings:  April 14th, Jeff Miller/Beechmont slated to convene, July 14th, October 13th.
