Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association

Off leash area update

Mar 03, 2004

By Nancy Norby

Portland Parks and Recreation has formed an off leash advisory committee that meets monthly to establish criteria for determining the success of the new off leash areas, evaluate the progress of these areas, and recommend policy for continuing the program. The committee meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Portland State Offices Building, 800 NE Oregon, room 140, 5:30?–7 p.m. There is always time for public comment, so feel welcome to come and observe.

An off leash area with set hours has been sited on the south side of Mt. Tabor Park, between Warner Pacific College and Harrison St. The area includes the wooded section but excludes the playground. Dogs are permitted off leash in this area 5?–9 a.m. and after 8 p.m. in the summer. Winter morning hours are the same, but evenings begin after 4 p.m. From November 1 to April 30, the off leash area is extended to include the whole park, excluding playgrounds and natural areas.

The Mt. Tabor neighborhood association has formed an additional committee that will begin meeting in February, and we are looking for volunteers. We will determine how we should help the parks department and how to help Mt. Tabor Park work through the process. For more information or to serve on the committee, call co-chairs Nancy Norby (503/232-0446) or Sharie Dietz (503/232-3930) or email shariedietz@yahoo.com.
