Mayor Ron Kirk to Speak to Neighborhood Leaders

Dallas Homeowners League to Hold 2nd Annual New Directors Boot Camp

DALLAS, TEXAS, August 2, 1999 - The Dallas Homeowners League will hold its 2nd annual “New Directors Boot Camp” on August 28, 1999 from 9:00 a.m. until noon in the Council Chambers at Dallas City Hall. This compact, half-day seminar provides training, education, and encouragement to individuals that either are, or aspire to be board members of neighborhood and homeowners’ associations. Groups throughout the Dallas metroplex are welcome and encouraged to send representatives to attend the seminar.

Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk will deliver the key note address. “We are thrilled that the Mayor can take time from his busy schedule to join us at Boot Camp this year,” said Martin Hoffman, League President. “Mayor Kirk recognizes the importance of strong neighborhood organizations to the stability of Dallas’s residential communities.”

Boot Camp attendees will learn how to run better meetings, raise money, attract and retain new members and deal more effectively with their elected officials. The seminar will also address legal issues facing board members, communications with members, improving neighborhood appearance, fund raising and nurturing volunteers. This seminar will provide inspiration as well as practical guidance for neighborhood leaders.

As a special benefit this year, in partnership with the Dallas Homeowners League, Denver based Neighborhood Link (www.neighborhoodlink.com) will display and offer the attendee’s associations free Web sites. Participants at the seminar will learn how to create, maintain, and receive access to their own Internet-based web pages.

The registration fee for Boot Camp is $10 per person (There is a $5 discount for Dallas Homeowners League member groups). The registration fee includes admission, all materials and free underground parking at City Hall. A limited number of scholarships are available. Walk-ins will be accommodated on a space available basis.

The Dallas Homeowners League is the oldest neighborhood network in Texas, and was formed in 1968 to help facilitate neighborhood groups in working together to improve Dallas’ neighborhoods.
