Meeting was held in the Churchill Room at Churchill Downs on January 13, 2010

Addressed items raised at last meeting:

  • State of the Department of Neighborhoods; as of 1/30/10 is does not exist anymore.  Likely will not return (may extend until February but then that's it).
  • Solid Waste Issue:  Next pickup dates will be listed under mylousville on the metro website.
  • Grants:   Reviewed how the discresionary funds are distributed by the Metro council
  • Parks:  Future meeting goal should revolve around bringing in a representative from the parks department to directly address concerns and questions from the neighborhood groups.

Priorities of the SLNC were discussed with a concerned David Tate.  The main focus of this group is the following items:

  1. Crime
  2. Education
  3. Housing

Discussion about the proposed zoning changes to build a Family Dollar on 3rd Street in front of Central Station.  Metro council was soon to vote on this hearing.  Keith Bowers reviewed what he said at the zoning meeting and informed us of what occurred there.  The SLNC members agreed that we hope that it does not pass but were not hopeful.

It was agreed that we need to get the neighborhood of Cloverleaf back involved. I have no notes if anyone was going to take a lead on this.  Seems to be an open issue.

Discussion about a detailed paper written by Hal Douglasburg who is writing a 20 year research history of Douglas Park.  There is alot of interesting history, and there is a push to put a bronze marker at the entrance during its 115th anniversary.  The park was originally in competition with Churchill Downs.  It had a lake and buggy arena.  When it closed they moved the soil from DP to CD for the track.  There was a discussion about creating a booklet for the history of tracks in Louisville.

Gary Jany gave a review about the meeting had at Churchill Downs concerning night racing and how the lights would be put in.  They are sky friendly and should not affect houses in the area except a few on backside.  The lights will dim until race time.  Discussion of parking lot lighting seemed to be the open issue.  The meeting was held at CD on 1/12/10

Our next meeting was scheduled for April 14th at 7pm Jeff Miller from Beechmont will convene (note this was rescheduled to take place on April 12th, and will be held at the library basement on Woodlawn).
