Heritage Trails

The Portland Museum has been very busy with creating Heritage trails for the neighborhood. There are three so far.
African American, Architectural and Maritime.
They all end at the Portland Wharf Park and sites are located through out the Portland neighborhood.
A design team is currently creating markers for the trails.

Portland Wharf Park

The Portland Wharf Park (located on the north side of the flood wall), will have some interesting items to see soon.
The Portland Museum with the funding from the Preserve America initiative has hired a design team, Rowland Design, to create an interpretive plan for the park.
The design will include ideas to mark the spot where the St. Charles Hotel once stood. The St. Charles was established by two well known families of the Portland area, Villier and MacQuire. It was a three story hotel with a nationally known garden in the rear. There will also be information regarding transportation, flooding, farm life, businesses and African American families that were residents of the original Portland.
Eventually, there will be a playground for young kids built in the park.
We hope it not only becomes a place to visit by tourist but also a place that the residents of Portland will enjoy and learn from the experience.
Metro Parks will take over once the Interpretive Plan is finished. They have some funding set aside to start the creating process.
