Plymouth Community Renewal Center, Inc.

HISTORY

The Plymouth Community Renewal Center, Inc. (PCRC) is a private, nonprofit urban missionary agency related to the Council for Health and Human Services Ministries of the United Church of Christ.

It was organized in 1980 by the Plymouth Congregational Church of Christ, to carry out the mission of the former agency (The Settlement House, est.1917) founded by a former pastor of Plymouth Church.

Since 1917, Plymouth has provided support and resources to disadvantaged individuals in the Louisville Metropolitan area and has worked to advance the quality of life and promote positive changes within the community. Plymouth has served as a bridge of understanding and has advocated communication between diverse groups of people.

MISSION
It shall be the mission of the Plymouth Community Renewal Center to renew and enhance the competence of the community. The mission will be accomplished by providing quality social services within the Russel Area to improve the education, cultural and economic lives of individuals regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, or religion.

PROGRAMS

ADULT and FAMILY LIFE SERVICES
Services offer a variety of activities and services for every member of the family. Family problems, issues and concerns are voiced, shared, and discussed with staff counselors. Parents are encouraged to be supportive of one another at all times. Young mothers are given guidance in parenting skills.

Education
A weekly tutorial program is implemented in cooperation with the Jefferson County Board of Education and is open to all children and youth.

Dyslexia
A tutorial program funded by The Crusade for Children, is offered as a remediation technique for pupils who show dyslexic characteristics. Pupils are given tutorial assistance as well as coping skills and they have access to a computer laboratory with learning software. An enhancement program is offered to help young people with self-esteem, self-awareness, career planning, and leadership training.

Salamagundi
This is a group of Senior Citizens that meet every Wednesday to participate in social activities, arts and crafts, and field trips (social and cultural events). Transportation, health services and lunches are provided free of charge.

Volunteer Training
We offer individuals the opportunity to learn new skills in working with the public and to share their time and abilities in service for others.

Food Distributions
Through Kentucky Harvest, this service is made possible each Wednesday and Friday. No one goes hungry with Plymouth services.

Counseling Referrals
We provide counseling within the capacity of our ability to individuals with a variety of problems, and when appropriate make necessary referrals to other agencies and groups. Special attention is given to young families and the homeless.

CLUBS AND YOUTH SERVICES

Programs and activities are designed to improve the quality of life for young people through social and cultural enrichment activities. Services include competitive recreational activites: basketball, football, softball, soccer, dance, and tennis. Events are based on interest and enrollment. Programs include: Summer Day Camp, MAP, Before & After School, and Spring Break Camp.

M.A.P. (managing attitude problems)
An innovative program for children, preteens and adolescents developed by Markham A. French. Markam is originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He attended Morehead State University, a small college nestled in the hills of eastern Kentucky. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in Speech. He has worked as a Probation Officer for the State of Kentucky, a Case Manager for a homeless-family shelter and a Family Center in Memphis, Tennessee. According to Markham, MAP, is designed to work like a map, providing participants with important information for navigating through the many challenges of growing up. The discussions, handouts, activities and videos in this program teach self-awareness, managing feelings, decision making, honesty, respect, courage, self-control, responsibility and more.

Before & After School
We are offering the program for children 5-13. This program will only be offered to children attending the following schools: Atkinson, Foster, Kennedy, Johnson, Brandeis, Byck, Perry, Wheatley, Young, Maupin, King, and Cochran. The program will start at 6:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. We will begin transporting children to school at 8:00 a.m. and picking them up immediately after school. All children must be here by 7:30 a.m. and must be picked up by 6:00 p.m. There will be a $10 late fee for any child not here by 7:30 a.m. or not picked up by 6:00 p.m. The weekly fee for this service is $40 per child, or $65 for two children, and $75 for three children. If you are only in need of this service in either the morning or afternoon the cost is $25 per week for one child, $40 per week for two children, and $50 per week for three children. It is very important that you register your children as soon as possible because space is limited. We hope you will enjoy Plymouth Community Renewal Center's services to your children. (We apologize, but this year we are unable to offer scholarships, but we will try to accomadate parents as much as possible. Should financing become available, we will notify parents that are in need of assistance. We will need verifacation of income, such as pay check stubs, award letters, etc. Weekly fees must be paid on Monday in the form of a money-order made payable to Plymouth Community Renewal Center.

Spring Break Camp
This program provides educational, cultural, and recreational activities for boys and girls ages 5 - 13, on a daily basis, for the Spring break week.

Supervised Game Room
Available some evenings, according to predetermined schedules and enrollment: pool, ping pong, video and table games.

Karate Class
This program provides men, womrn, and children of all ages the opportunity to become involved in martial-arts training.

Summer Day Camp
This program provides educational, cultural, and recreational activities for boys and girls ages 5 - 13, on a daily basis, for ten weeks, during the months of June through August.

Tap Dancing
This program teaches men, women, and children of all ages the art of tap dancing as a healthy and entertaining skill.
