A Quiet Place to Come Home To

The quiet, well kept homes that were largely built in the 1950s makes up the neighborhood between Wingfield ave. Millers Lane, Cane Run Road, and Dixie Highway.
The people who live and work in this area are diverse in educational backgrounds, professions, and political/community involvement. Culturally the area is over 50% African American and many who have been in the are since the eearly 60s have remained or returned to the area.There are a variety of small businesses, trucking companies, and no-chemical producing warehouses surrounding the community.

What Makes A Good Neighborhood

Most residents will tell you they appreciate the green spacces we have in the area. They think it is important to the well being of all residents living in the area.The average lot is large enough to mow easily, but each home is not sitting on top of the other.
There are some occassions that loud noise from music or cars is of some concern to residents.the Jefferson County Police department has helped us to establish a block watch and hold a quarterly
meeting with other southwest Jefferson county residents with similar issues.

Getting Started with Friends and Neighbors

In 1989 two women that are still very close friends started walking three to four times each week at the nearby Chickasaw park. The walks were fun and healthy for our spirit and physical well being. We were joined by others who walked and talked with us many evenings and Saturday mornings.

Our "walk & talk" sessions would take us places we had never been and have since traveled. We all had concerns about our own neighborhoods and we worked together to access information, share it, and encourage others to take action in the areas where they worked, lived, and played.

Over time we saw changes made, to start with the dirt path we logged many miles on was graveled and then paved. We also found ourselves working hard to plant flowers in the hard clay dirt of three of the local parks. Our efforts were recognized by then city alderman Paul Bather. We beleive that because of our early efforts others have come forth to make Shawnee Park more beautiful with restorations to the Broadway entrance flower bed and the historical bed near the old theater pavillion. The Algonquin Park on Cypress Ave. made positive changes and upgrades to its swim and tennis facilities also.

Over time we have made efforts to keep our neighbors informed and motivated to take actions that enhance, educate, and preserve our communities. We invite you to participate by sharing your vision, and your skills in community projects, and long term planning and development.
