What is CPR and Why Should I Learn It? Part 2

ABC 15 - Valley Volunteers: Summer of Supervision

Valley Volunteers: Summer of Supervision
a News Channel 15 Story

Each year in Arizona, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under four. Most often this tragedy occurs in a child's own pool. We urge you to join our ABC15 Valley Volunteers in the Summer of Supervision project to help keep kids safe around water this summer.
ABC15 encourages you to make a commitment to safety by the pool, or anyplace where there's water, and to learn CPR. We encourage you to sign and save our ABC 15 Pool Pledge as part of your commitment to making this a safe summer around water. In addition, ABC 15 and the United Phoenix Firefighters Association are teaming up to help you learn CPR. You'll find all the details in the Pledge.

Safety Tips

Here are some tips from the American Red Cross:
· NEVER leave a child unobserved around water. Eyes must always be on the child.
· Enclose yard and pool with a self-locking, self-closing fence with vertical bars. Openings should be no more than 4" wide between bars.
· Never leave furniture, or anything else a child could climb atop, near a pool fence.
· Always keep basic life-saving equipment -- pole, rope, and life preservers -- near the pool and know how to use them.
· Install a phone by the pool and keep a cordless nearby.
· Post CPR instructions and emergency phone numbers in pool area.
· Remove pool covers completely before using pool.
· Learn CPR and insist that baby-sitters, grandparents, and other child-care givers know it.
· Always swim with someone; never swim alone.
Also be aware that pool drains can be very dangerous. Hair and bathing suit strings can easily get caught, trapping children under water.
