The Art of Thanksgiving and Other Stuf!

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER

Thank you God, for letting me take part
in this fascinating journey called life, thank you for each sunrise and sunset and for the magic of your incredible universe.

Thank you Lord, for beautiful flowers,
for birds of song, for the ability to love and be loved and for my reasonable good health.

Thank you God, for good friends, good books, beautiful works of art
and special things you do for me
everyday of my life.

Thank you Lord, for life's simple pleasures: a nice trip, a breath taking vista, a good movie, a tasty meal, and the ability to dance and listen to beautiful music.

Thank you Lord, for the ability to
help others in their time of need,
for rays of sunshine, for flickering stars and for each warm and friendly smile.

Thank you Lord, for keeping our family together through good and bad times and for the bond between parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives.

But most of all, Thank you Lord, for the privilege of being well and alive at this moment and for giving me the ability to write these humble words of praise.

The Art of Thanksgiving

The art of thanksgiving is thanksgiving.

It is gratitude in action...

It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly.

It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good.

It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others.

It is thanking God for opportunities by accepting them as a challenge to achievement.

It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy.

It is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful.

It is thanking God for inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others.

It is thanking God for health and strength by the care and reverence you show your body.

It is thanking God for the creative ideas that enrich life by adding your own creative contributions to human progress.

It is thanking God for each new day by living it to the fullest.

It is thanking God by giving hands, arms, legs, and voice to your thankful spirit.

It is adding to your prayers of thanksgiving acts of thanksgiving.

How To Observe Thanksgiving (and Everyday)

Count your blessings instead of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears;
Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth;
Count on God instead of yourself.

Come, Ye Thankful People Come

Come ye thankful people come,
Raise the song of harvest home!
All is safely gathered in,
Ere the winter storms begin;
God our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied:
Come to God's own temple, come,
Raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God's own field
Fruit unto his praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown
Unto joy or sorrow grown;
First the blade, and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of the harvest! grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.

For the Lord our God shall come,
And shall take his harvest home;
From his field shall in that day
All offenses purge away,
Give his angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast;
But the fruitful ears to store
In his garner evermore.

Even so, Lord, quickly come,
Bring thy final harvest home;
Gather thou thy people in,
Free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified,
in thy presence to abide;
Come, with all thine angels, come,
Raise the glorious harvest home.

First Thanksgiving

If I had been a Pilgrim child
Among the fields and forests wild
Where deer and turkey used to roam,
A cabin would have been my home
With fireplace and earthen floor
And bearskins hanging at the door.
I would have gathered berries bright
For candles fragrantly alight,
And dug for clams and picked the corn
And laid the table smooth and worn.
Or hunted nuts hard-shelled and good
And helped in any way I could,
With time to laugh and play and run
When Indian children came for fun.
And on the first Thanksgiving Day
I would have met with friends to pray
And thank the Lord for all his care
In keeping us together there.

Margaret Hillert

The First Thanksgiving

('Twas) the Day After Thanksgiving

'Twas the day after Thanksgiving and all through the land,
Most of the people had feasted, 'till they could hardly stand.
Tons of turkey and pumpkin pies galore,
Had everyone stuffed and prone on the floor.

When all of a sudden, there arose such a clatter,
They crawled to their windows, to see what was the matter!
When out of the sky, their eyes did behold
Tiny parachutes floating down through the cold.

Attached to each chute was a brightly colored bag.
The mere thought of more food made everyone gag.
But try to their nature, they all had to know,
So timidly at first, they crawled through the snow.

The bags were everywhere, in the streets in the trees
And more could be seen, floating down in the breeze.

They all rushed to open them, after-all they were free.
Something for nothing, how much better could it be.
But the bags were all empty, except for a note,
Containing a message from which I will quote.

"You've all had your turkey, but did you give thanks
For your comfortable homes and money in the banks?
What of the others, less fortunate than you?
Did you think of their plight . . . well, did you?

The thousands of starving not a crumb to be had.
Did the thought of homeless children make you sad?
I want you to be happy, for you are my children, you see.
But please think of your neighbors, and occasionally me.

I am your Father, and as such I truly care.
If you learn nothing else, please learn to share.
Christmas is coming, the day of my birth.
Another day of feasting, merriment and mirth.

Families will gather, and songs will be sung,
And on the mantles, stockings will be hung.
Please take this bag, although it be small
And fill it with love, and caring for all.

Give it to someone you know to be in need.
Make this a day of love and not one of greed.
And now with my blessings, I'll be on my way.
I'll leave just this message . . . Have a nice day!

--Gene Arden Thompson

'Twas the Day After Thanksgiving
http://www.aspiring-community.com/files2/asp264.html

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all - Pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump,
May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize,
May your thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.

May your thanksgiving be blessed !!

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation

... Abraham Lincoln, a man who learned to face discouragement and move beyond it. Did you know that it was Abraham Lincoln who, in the midst of the Civil War, in 1863, established the annual celebration of Thanksgiving?

Lincoln had learned how important it is to stop and thank God in the midst of great difficulties. "We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God.

We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in
peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that [the gifts of God] should be
solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens . . . to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
